Year 1

Autumn 2021

Overview

I started out my college career with early fall start. During that time I took one five credit class: STEM in an Ancient World. This class was a great start for me as it combined my interests in history and the sciences. I got to work in a group again and it helped me to understand how a typical college class worked.

For the main portion of the quarter I took eight classes for a total of 17 credits. I was a little scared to be starting out with so many classes but because so many of them are seminars it was not too difficult to manage.  I have enjoyed all of my classes and made some friends with similar interests.

Tools and Weapons, by Brad Smith

My first artifact is the book Tools and Weapons by Brad Smith, which we read in my honor's computer science seminar. Through this book Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft writes about technology and some of its impacts on humanity. In the class discussions we talked about how technology and big tech companies have effected people around the globe. As a person who might work in the tech industry it was interesting to think about how my job would impact society. This book also had me think about what kind of tech companies I would want to work at.

Winter 2022

Overview

This was a quarter I had been dreading. I took a schedule that was loaded with tough courses. I was definetley busier than I was my previous quarter, I had to spend a lot more nights studying for tests and practicing. In the end, though I survived and I actually got better grades than I anticipated.

I also got several new oppurtunities this quarter. I was recommended for a couple of internships for this summer with Boeing and Microsoft, and am excited to possibly working with either of those companies this summer. My saxophone quartet was also invited to play a concerto with the University of Washington Wind Ensemble, which was an amazing experience.

Courses
Total Credits: 18

  • MATH 125: Calculus with Analyltic Geometry II

  • CSE 143: Computer Programming II

  • MUSIC 201: First Year Music Theory I

  • MUSICP 331: Applied Saxophone

Concerto Grosso, by William Bolcom

IMG_6297.JPG

This quarter my saxophone quartet was invited to play this piece with the wind ensemble. This piece was a lot of fun and was a hybrid of traditional wind band music and jazz. This was also the first time I have performed a concerto with a large ensemble. It required a lot of work to put this piece together. We had sectionals twice a week along with wind ensemble rehearsals, and with the other pieces I was working on meant I was playing three to four hours a day. I feel like I have grown a lot as a player this quarter and its been great work with such amazing saxophonists.

Winter 2022 Artifacts

Spring 2022

This quarter was much less stressful than Winter Quarter. While I still did take a large quantity of classes, they were less difficult. I only had one "weed out" class to contend with this quarter, MATH 126, in comparison to two in the previous quarter. I used the extra space in my schedule to take two honors classes, CSE 390 and HONORS 391 (Cultural Landscapes of Seattle and the Salish Sea).

With an easier quarter I had some more time to focus on my interests and had some more free time. I spent my extra time putting some additional hours into practicing saxophone, attending concerts, and enjoying the outdoors with my friends.

Spring 2022 Artifacts

Honors 391

My first artifact is one of the papers I wrote about the train systems of the Rainier Beach neighborhood of Seattle and how they have historically displaced marginalized groups. Honors 391 is the first big 5 credit honors class I have taken. This class was about the the connections between the physical and cultural landscapes in the Seattle area. In this class we saw that the manipulation of the physical landscape has harmed minority groups in the area. Eventually, we got to work in groups to focus on indivudual neighborhoods and are putting the entire classes research together into a website. This project gave helped me learn how to do research especially on topics without much information. Overall I thought it was interesting to learn some of the hidden history of the areas I have grown up around.
